Other Information
Ph.D Programme
The availability of qualified staff, and satisfactory physical conditions provided an impetus to initiate research work. In 1973-74, Ph.D. programme
was started in the Department and two lecturers of this Faculty were enrolled as
Research Scholars. By this date we have produced about 25 Ph.Ds
M.Phil Programme
Another major change introduced in the academic programme of the Department was the beginning of M.Phil classes in the Department, in 1978. Each year about 4-8 Research Scholars are enrolled. At present we have about 15 Ph.D. and
15 M.Phil scholars on roll who are working on various research projects for their theses.
Revision of Syllabi
Since 1974 syllabi of courses and studies for M.A./M.Sc. and M.Phil/Ph.D have been constantly revised. The salient features of new schemes
have been:
(a) increase in number of papers / specialization in Counseling, Clinical, and Testing.
(b) some weight to internal assessment; (c) reorganization and updating of the contents of the syllabus emphasizing recent trends, empirical work, and quantitative methods.
(d) to replace the existing 2 years M.Sc. programme with an integrated
4 years undergraduate and 2 years MS programme.
Co-Curricular Activities
Besides the various teaching and research programmes, the Department has always remained a centre of the academic and co-curricular activities. To begin with the Department held an All Pakistan Senior Psychologists Seminar in October 1966 to identify the problems of academic and professional interest to Psychologists. Its report has been published in the first issue of Pakistan Psychological Studies, (1969). It was in this Seminar that the foundations of Pakistan Psychological Association (PPA) were laid. Its First Session was held in Dhaka in 1967. The Sixth Pakistan Psychological Conference was held in Peshawar from 27-29 April, 1985. It was hosted by the Department of Psychology, University of Peshawar and was a great success.
In 1983 the young psychologists with patronage of their seniors have established a new association, Khyber Psychological Association (KPA).The KPA held its first annual function on 24th-25th April, 1984. It was revitalized and renamed in 1987 as Young Psychologists Forum (YPF) by Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Hussain Gilani
in 1987 and finally during 2003 it was again named as Khyber Psychological Society (KPS) by
Dr. Jahanzeb and is now listed on our website under student affairs. We
also have a Khyber Psychological Association (KPA) which is the provincial chapter of PPA.
Research Journal
This Department started publishing a research journal, Pakistan Psychological Studies in 1969, but due to financial constraints the Department has not been able to publish this Journal regularly and only six issues of this journal have come out so far.
The Department is planning to bring out a new journal of psychology with the
name of Khyber Behavioural Studies pretty soon.
Seminars
Bimonthly Seminars are held regularly. Both the faculty members as well as the students actively participate in these Seminars. The Department has also arranged National Seminars on different important issues. The department also holds its
Annual Conferences/Workshops at Bara Gali Summer Campus (Abbottabad) and at
University of Peshawar.
